Oh, ok, I see now what you guys are bent out of shape about. Roger fixed it to reflect exactly what I was trying to say. Thanks Roger. I was trying to dispel the commonly- held notion that the Mint is filled with only specially skilled and specially trained people. So, when I said "government workers," I (obvious in my mind) meant some of them, not all of them, everywhere, all time. I apologize if my comment was offensive to you. That said, what we are doing here in this hobby is celebrating the failures of Mint workers! Those of you who are upset with me are also guilty. How do you think the person who screwed up the die would feel knowing we are here celebrating his mistake? That is exactly what we are doing. I apparently chose my words poorly in this case, and I apologize. On the other hand, I would also be remiss to not point out a certain degree of hypocrisy in this perceived offence.
Why are 93 proofs close AM?

So they should ask congress before making a mistake to be sure they approve of itI have been doing a little research... Maybe there was an error at the beginning but once discovered it may have been to late to restart the minting process... In accordance with Title 31 5112 Section D para 2 of the United States Code changing the design of a coin requires permission from the Secretary after consulting with the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee and the Commission of Fine Arts... So even with a mistake on someones part it is basically an act of congress to change a design... Since the different parties are required to record what they do in annual reports the info of why the 93 proofs are Close AMs should be obtainable... Hope that helps a bit!!!
I would question what they really consider a change. Seems like it would be like changing from IHC to Lincoln then wheat to memorial then the 2009 series then the shields. I think they do approve material changes so they would have to approve zinc. They gave them samples of those aluminum 73 cents, that's were they came from since some kept or lost their samples. Something similar went on with 1856 flying eagles, some of their samples got out.
I'm not sure if they would need to approve things like a minor new ODV like 1969 or RDV like 1973 or any of the other minor changes or mintmark styles.
Good question, what things do they really need to approve.Comment

Will, guilty as charged as there's no doubt about me looking forward to the exotic errors and varieties, how ever they occur.
Maybe the workers just want a little recognition and intentionally cause errors, because even negative attention is better than none. Wait a minute, that applies for advertising and politics.Comment

Most 'end year' government wise, ends in October.Great points Ed! I wonder if the economy and year end financials had much to do with all of it. Even though it's a government entity, some years it probably made more money than others so they could spend more to make more proof dies (so they could sell them in mint sets) and make more money. It's all about money!Comment

LOL... you are absolutely right! Some people in my family will not touch mayo - I'm a Hellman's or Duke's fan but it doesn't take much for me (I have been known to scrape off too much mayo from a fast food joint burger with a french fry, but I don't eat that fry LOL) Belgium waffles are the bomb!Comment

I've actually been to Belgium. Brussels. Lots of beers there. Different flavors. Had to try them all, rolled out on a cart from the store,...me and the cart, on a Sunday afternoon, right on the steps of the court house. Funny, eh. The waffles are the bomb! Not the flavored beers though. LOL.Comment
