Odd die markings?

These pics are from a 1943S 1MM-10.

My coin appears to also be a LDS version as I have all the same markings as the listed coin. The one thing extra that mine has is what appears to be a flaw in the die. My pics show an area directly above the date that is odd. Sort of looks like termite damage/trails with deep gouges emanating outward from the area.

While the CC coin does not appear to have this issue, the photos don't really show the area above the date. The area in question does not look as though it is damage to my coin because it still has a smooth, satiny appearance.

Just curious on what this is and what caused it.

I would say it's just a tired die but don't forget we are dealing with a plated cent here. It could be something trapped under the plating. Did you try pressing down on it, with something that won't damage the coin?

Actually I have seen this on many steel cents. I am too think it mat be more about plating or stuck stuff than the die itself although hammering away of steel is harder than hammering away on the softer copper. Whats also interesting is that I would consider it a planchet like flaw but third party grading companies seem to have no problem with the depressions and grade coins with it rather than not.

I agree with the others. Another possibility is struck through grease. Those things always leave something that looks a bit weird.

I believe you are correct: Mine, at least, does have the cheek gouge.

As for the OP topic, the coin does appear to have other little surface issues so very likely just plating, however, (to me) the gouges don't seem like they would be plating.

I'm with Bob... Not sure on Wexlers 010 crossing to CCs 010??? Both appear to be the same die stage but Wexlers looks to be slightly south and east compared to CCs???
