V V population and value chart gone?

    Rats.

It appears V V has done away with the Population and Value report at the bottom of the variety listings. I'm not sure how many people were aware of it or even used it, but I found it a very useful resource which is now AWOL.
    Example of missing V V feature/resource, even for FS#'s. LINK .

I seem to remember seeing some listings with it missing over the last 6 months or so but didn't realize it was on it's way out. Does anyone remember when they noticed it having been removed from all listings entirely? (Dr. Wiles, any input?)

It may or may not have been up to date with how fast and furious the varieties sell in today's market but it will be missed.

I, for one, hope it is just being updated and will return better than before.

I think it's good the information has been removed. Inaccurate information is worse than no information to me. That information was generally pretty inaccurate. A better way would be like was done with the 1910-S RPM-003, with sampling of people and communities likely to have encountered a given variety.

If I want to know if a variety is rare, first thing I do is see if Brian Ribar has one (or many) for sale (https://www2.briansvarietycoins.com/), same with Eric Axtell's website (https://sites.google.com/site/rpmcoins/). Sometimes I email Brian Ribar to see if he has seen it before. I also check out Eric's wantlist to see if he has the variety in his personal collection (only applying to RPMs obviously). In addition to these two individuals, I also have access to 2 prominent variety collections which I am integrating into my own, and the master list of another collector friend I sometimes reference. If none of these have the variety, then it seemingly is pretty dang rare. As is, I'm down to about 123 CONECA RPMs needed myself, Eric's down to 103 CONECA RPMs needed (assuming his website is accurate), and another prominent collector is down to around 65-70 CONECA RPMs needed. I don't know anyone who's closer than that, though I hope to continue to whittle down my own number of needed varieties.

My previous comment got me curious. It turns out there are quite a few coins on Eric's CONECA RPM wantlist I had, and vice versa. The vast majority I only have 1, so they may not be common, but aren't exceedingly rare (i.e. only a single example known). Without overlap, there are 67 needed CONECA varieties between our collections. I would say in that case there are probably around 65-70 rare (or at least exceedingly difficult to find) CONECA RPMs.

I check Eric's site out regularly. He's constantly updating his listings. So one day you'll just see a coin there you been looking for and thought you missed last time you looked. lol. bought many coins from Eric. Still working the kinks out on the picture part, I think. Found a few more pictures I dont have access to.

Thanks for the comments (and the links).
Dan, Eric and Brian have exemplary collections and records of your varieties. I and other less organized hobbyists, not so much.

This is why it was useful, even if it was just to see that there were a lot or only a few examples graded for ANACS, NGC and PCGS.
There is no rarity scale in use like ancient or classic coins use. I'm still going to miss it for a quick reference. I'll either bid longer on things when I should have stopped or won't realize the value in a certain coin and miss an opportunity.

I would love to see a link for a variety that still has the chart. It use to be on all of them and I can't seem to find any varieties with it. (None on the '09 DDR's, '41 DDO's, or even the '38 RPM-002 as an example)

Thanks Jason. That's exactly what had me flummoxed. They were there until they weren't!!

I knew the chart for more modern coins wasn't listed since there probably weren't many results yet for comparison.
All I can think of is that the amount of work involved trying to keep it up to date must have been too time-consuming without some software to crunch the numbers.

I guess I'll have to flail about more wildly than normal during auctions.

                  Thanks for the recommendations fella's

                  Pete,
If you cannot find it on Brian's site, and I do not have one on mine. you can also go to the top left of my web page, you will see a menu, scroll down to Sold Coins/Varieties.

This page will show you what I have seen and listed/Sold in the last ten years. with prices. The pic links may/may not work. I deleted a few photo's of coins a long time ago, but the prices paid are still there.

Thanks Eric. That will be very helpful to help gauge rarity to a degree. I just have to realize the prices may be up to 10 years old.
For those looking on his site, I found the sold coins in the upper left corner under "Site Map".
