    Shield sunburst anomaly.

I don't remember if this "sunburst" anomaly, as I call it, was every discussed. This is the first 2018 I've seen with it. I noticed this for the first time on 2014's and seemed very prevalent in that year. Also, I don't recall seeing it on the reverse, ever. Maybe some sort of deterioration?

    Thanks for any input.
    Jon.

I like your description but I believe you have found a great example of die flow lines. They become really prevalent on older, well used dies when polishing isn't performed.

I'm going to hypothesize that towards the end of some years, they overuse dies to meet the production quota. With current automated production, I believe the mint finds it less expensive to produce lots of dies rather than than maintain them by polishing. (It's expensive to employ experienced workers.) If they look like they may fall short of dies, mint just overuses the dies.

I agree with Cliff that these appear to be unusually heavy die flow lines from a very used die.

Thanks guys! Flow lines it is. I had just always wondered but never asked.

The toddies help me see late at night, Jason, sometimes more than what is there.

I stand corrected about the reverse, guess I'm just not paying attention. 2011P
