A Buffalo Nickel in my Lincoln Cent Collection???

You may think that I have been enjoying too many adult beverages here, but let me explain. As I approach completion of this collection and find that the few remaining are either unobtanium or seldom available in nice enough grade, I began thinking that since the matte proofs are my favorite subset of Lincolns and I believe my 1916 example is probably the most beautiful single coin in my collection that it deserved a mate. Therefore, I finally found a Buffalo that I felt would go nicely with the Lincoln in both eye appeal and value.

In the year 1916, the mint only produced proof examples of the cent and nickel for several reasons. Mint records show only 600 of each delivered. Populations published by PCGS/NGC and factored for resubmissions show approximately 263 cents and 343 nickels in all grades. It is believed most of the rest were either destroyed or released to regular circulation since they were wildly unpopular with the collecting public at the time.

In any case, I have attached a picture of the PCGS labels for the 2 coins and here are the links to the True View images:

If any of you are comfortable in grading Buffalos, since it does not have a CAC blessing, please comment if you think this example is on the strong or weak side for a PR67.

As a side bonus, since the PCGS Registry Set for 1916 Proofs is only 2 coins, I could enter that at 100% but am not really into registry set competition.

Grading proofs has never been a strong suit of mine. I always seem to overdo it.

Gorgeous pair by the way. Nice provenance on the nickel by the way. Did you pick this up when he upgraded?

Agree - both are fantastic. But on the nickel I am going to go with my gut here and ask the question - why did Hansen not CAC it ?? I think it was probably sent in and did not bean because to me it looks like it lacks luster. If you look at the others graded examples you can see its the luster that seems to get the higher grades. You are probably right. I think he would send in everything and what did not sticker would probably be upgraded. But for me I would be happy with anything he would have purchased!! If you visit that unnamed forum sponsored by one of the TPGs you will find lots of folks complaining that they would never have one of his hand me downs and if they did get one they would immediately send it in to get it re-slabbed. Geez....

Wow, what a beautiful pair of coins. I'd be very happy to own both or either of those.

Appreciate the compliments. Promise that I will not let any more "outsiders" into the Lincoln collection! Guess I will set up the 2 piece 1916 Proof PCGS Registry Set and see how that works out in the standings. I will let you know...

Hard to beat a high grade buffalo nickel. One of the most beautiful coins made.
