The answer is short and sweet. Better work practices and quality control. The machinery is all pretty much the same. It seems that the Denver Mint employees do a better job of examining the dies before they are used to strike coinage. Some do get by, but at a far less frequency than the Philadelphia Mint.

I agree with Bob. I would add that the Philly Mint also has a lot more to do in overall coinage production coupled with all the new designs they have to deal with simply increases the chances of varieties and errors as compared to the other mints.

I would have agreed with the idea the idea that quality control at the Philadelphia Mint; well actually I do, to a degree, but after all these '09 DDRs I keep thinking there has to be something else adding to that or a different reason entirely.

What bothers me is this, if the same proportion of doubled dies were produced in Denver as in Philly, while their physical number would be smaller because their production run is smaller, that would still be a lot of dies with doubling for employees to identify and disregard. It just seems wasteful and hard to imagine the Denver Mint identifying what could be hundreds of dies a year across all denominations. Of course it is possible, but there are so many minor DDRs from Philly, could Mint employees in Denver be that good at spotting them?

Along these lines, but I guess a different track, if in some way quick sloppy work aids the production of class IX doubled dies, maybe it is with the production of the dies and less so the examination. Maybe they are doing something, too fast, too, I don’t know…something, that aids sensitive parts of certain dies to snap back and form doubled dies.

I almost don’t want to know for sure. If the Mint understood it fully, they probably would stop it from happening…then what would we be doing right now?

An important thing to note is that all dies are prepared at the philly mint. So all rpms and ddo's were created at the philly mint.
