    1917 DDO

I just received an addition to my set that I have been searching for over a long time. This variety is considered major by PCGS and is very hard to find with good eye appeal and in higher grade. They say it is because the variety was not discovered until 1977 so most of the examples became circulated. Additionally, this coin is attributed on the PCGS holder and the population reports show this to be uncommon.

This coin looks great in hand for an AU58BN. It has a few percent red on the obverse and none on the reverse with the rest of the surfaces the even, correct color one would expect for AU. The TrueView, as is common for a copper coin, is not color accurate. However, having it made the buying decision much easier. It allowed me to use my image editor to convert to grayscale and study the strike and surface preservation. For luster and eye appeal, one has to roll the dice when buying on the web. In this case I am very pleased with the result.

Do any of you folks have this variety and do you feel this one is acceptable?

Excellent variety. Your has a very pleasing look to it. Congrats on the culmination to the end of a long search.

I found a VF30/35 roll searching not long after getting back into collecting. It was very satisfying as a newbie to start out on this variety but it "spoilt" me.

Excellent example. Mine is a VF 25 and I hope one day to acquire a nicer example. But the one I got was done with a trade with L&C coins for a AU53 1911 D RPM 2. It was a small up grade over the FN 15 I had.

Thanks for all your kind comments. As I mentioned, this particular variety is tough to find in the marketplace with any eye appeal. This eBay vendor is way up in Stockholm, ME, about as far away from me as one can get. It took 11 days for the registered package to get here, but that was OK by me. The vendor was asking way too much but accepted my offer maybe because I explained my reasoning behind it.

As you can probably tell by my avatar, I am partial to this variety. I have been lucky enough to have 3 in my possession, but none as nice as yours or the one Bob posted. Beautiful coin!
