Nice. It seems that 2009 was an active year for errors and varieties.

amac44...I don't know who the folks are that think this is done on purpose, but contrary to popular belief, the mint does not purposely allow clashes, or any other error or variety solely for the purpose of selling more sets. Clashes like this can be found in the LP sets as well as the regular business strikes. They make enough money selling the LP sets as it is. They do pride themselves on quality control, but sometimes, things just don't work out that way...especially this year.
Clashes happen when a planchet is not seated in the collar between strikes. In order to do this purposely, they would have to keep the planchets from feeding into the machinery in the first place. Highly unlikely, and when dies clash, the noise it makes leaves little doubt as to what happened.

Bob is most correct on this point; the Mint does not purposely produce error and variety coins.

I was very much surprised to learn that the Philadelphia mint dod not get an upgrade in 1999 like the Denver mint did. What this means is that the Mint is still using the single squeeze presses from pre 1986. Now maybe you can understand why Philadelphia is prone to making mistakes, it may very well be the equipment thatthey must use.
