    1909 VDB Proof

I can you tell a proof from a normal VDB? Is it the grade? Also I was wounding what you think about the eye of this 1909? Do you think it could be MD?

Early proof Lincolns have distinct characteristics such as sharp edges/satin finish (sand blast fields) among others. Mark Flynns book has the diagnostics for each year. It is a great book to get if your interested in early proofs. Early non-proof Lincolns generally have strong strikes (great detail) so they can be confused with proofs. Your coin pictured is not a proof and the eye does not look doubled to me. The lettering on the obverse looks more rounded to me as opposed to sharp straight edge lettering and the fields look like a common coin (although in great condition). Of course, this is just my opinion and I could always be wrong.

P.S. (side note): Thank you Frank for the coins that you sent me.

You are very welcome. Right after I sent the coins I found another stamped coin with 2 sailer hooks, one on the east and one on the west on the obv.I gave it away but would of gave it to you if I would of waited another day before mailing. Hope you enjoyed them.

It does not look like a Proof to me. The author of the book is Kevin Flinn.

If you want to look for the diagnostics for a Proof VDB, check the post about half way through this thread on the PCGS forum:
