PCGS and ANACS ...a price con-parison by My2cents

If you were to have 30 Lincoln Cent Die Varieties Graded all at once it would cost about $1650.00 to have PCGS grade those coins. It would cost less than half of that or $720.00 to have it done by ANACS. If you were to send those same 30 Lincolns into ANACS by the end of this month (Jan. 31, 2010) you would only pay $450.00 because there is a deal on.

Hmmmm. Whats up with that? If somebody can explain to me why PCGS costs so much more than the next guy it would be great. Oh I almost forgot. You have to pay PCGS for the privilege of sending in those coins for an additional $49.99 thus raising the cost of those 30 coins to $55.00 per coin or $1700.00, this also includes the S/H.

Oh my friggin lord; for that kind of money you could purchase a 1909-S VDB in extremely fine condition,

My2cents is Jeffrey P. LaPlante and I do comment on occasion whether it be for good or ill.

Well this is my view of it. Just like any name brand stuff, it always cost more. People see PCGS as more strict grading company that only grades the best coins. So usually a coin in a PCGS holder will be worth more then in a ANACS holder. When I sold my sold my 1955 DDO AU58 by ANACS, the dealer told me it was in the wrong holder and needed to be PCGS. But for all my coins, they go to ANACS unless its a key or something really rare. Thanks, Josh

On most varieties I cannot see anyone using PCGS unless you are a dealer as they are too expensive. However, if you are already collecting PCGS slabbed varieties or a full set of Lincolns and some you purchase come that way, that would seem logical to have others slabbed by them. I do feel the big varieties sell better in PCGS slabs over any other TPG and would probably cover the attribution fees, but something like 1963D DDO-001 probably would not sell high enough in a PCGS slab to cover the costs, but 1972P DDO-001 probably would.

If what I have read over and over again suggests anything, "a numismatist should buy the coin and not the holder." Then I have to ask how the heck a piece of plastic with printing ink can increase the value of a coin? This is a complete sham and I would venture to guess that at some point there are going to be a lot of very unhappy numismatists holding onto some very expensive plastic.

Here are some things to consider:

          PCGS does not charge a variety fee for popular varieties (the ones on the price guide) 17 ddo 1, 36 ddo 1, 44 d/s, 09 ddo 1, 22 plain, 41 ddo 1&2, 60 D ddo 1, 72 ddo 1, 55 ddo 1, 83 ddr 1, 84 ddo 1, 95 ddo 1, wide am's, and more.

PCGS certifed varieties sell for MUCH more than ANACS varieties for whatever reason

The whole TPG thing is a mixed bag in general. You need them to deal with Chinese fakes - 1909S VDBs - uncleaned '55 DDOs. But then they screw things up with "First Strikes," Low Leaf, High Leaf garbage, not slabbing '09 DDRs and getting many errors wrong. ANACS will slab anything and you can customize the label. PCGS slabbed coins sell for more...

              Remember certification does three things:

              Guarantees authenticity
              Protects the coin
Gives a expert opinion of the coins grade

These give collectors and dealers security they don't have with loose coins

So one could, if they could grade coins pretty well, take advantage of this by buying accurately graded ANACS coins cheaply, submit them to PCGS, and sell them at a higher price.

It's funny this topic came up. I just sent ANACS 16 nice 1909-1938 RPM's because they were decently graded," nothing under VF+" And I have begun to slab all of my type Lincoln set. Sent another 17 including: My 09-S VDB went back because of a cracked holder ANACS61RB, My 09-S MS64-5, my 10-S MS63-4, my 14-D XF+-AU. I'm hoping they do a good job on the grades. We'll see......
