    ICG vs. PCGS

Im not familiar with ICG and wondered if their reputation for grading coins is at par with the major grading services?

I think their reputation is very good. They have several of the "old" Anacs graders on board. The problem is that ICG coins are usually discounted in the marketplace. So, if you submit to them with the intent to sell, you will likely be disappointed with the return.

      Grading Services

I don't know about ICG but ANACS is just as tough as NGC and PCGS and way less money, there will come a time when ANACS will be just as well thought of as those other two. This will happen only if enough folks talk, write, and explain the value of their services. If you were to take a coin graded by ANACS and try to have it crossed to a NGC or PCGS slab they would most probably pass muster and maybe to even do better. The new management is doing a fine job of keeping the grading standards up, I just had over 50 coins slabbed by ANACS and man they were tough on me. I have had folks tell me that I am a conservative grader and so even I was surprised at their standards. If one were to grade the services though my guess would be something like this:

      1. PCGS
      2. NGC
      3. ICCS (Canada and Canadian Coins only)
      4. ANACS
      5. ICG

I personally use PCGS for all key dates and major varities and ANACS for all other varieties. I believe that PCGS, NGC, ANACS and ICG are very similar in their coin grading standards and accuracy. What it comes down to for me is cost, reputation, and policies. PCGS and ANACS work best for me. PCGS and NGC are very similar in their costs, policies and reputation. ANACS and IGC are very similar as in their costs, policies and reputation. I think Jeff's ranking is accurate.

When selling ICG they always go for around 2 number grades lower then what they are graded at, sometimes worse. Not sure of why but thats how it is.

Thanx everyone, I saw a coin I wanted in a ICG holder and thats why I asked about them. I feel more comfortable making the purchase now that I read your replies.

I would always buy the coin and not the slab and after reading B.J.'s warnings I am not sure I will be buying any expensive coins from EBAY anymore unless they are slabbed.

Okay, weighing in on ICG. I know Randy Campbell personally and he is the head attributer for that company. Randy has been around for awhile in this business, most notable with ANACS before the big switch-er-roue, which I will not get into. This is one person (Randy) that does know his stuff and he is top of the line for counterfeit coins.

My choice is with ICG since I trust Randy's judgment above all else, but then again, that is just my preference.
