    Planchet issue, lamination or other?

I've never seen one quite like this. What do you think?

BadThad, I'm glad you posted that. I have 3 zincolns just like that. One of them has an area larger than the one you have. Interested to find out what it is. Again, thank you.

It looks sort of like there was something hard stuck to the die, like hardened grease. If it were the planchet I would think the surface anomaly wouldn't be confined to just the field with it not occurring onto the design rim too.

        Hi BadThad

Could the coin have been plated twice. It looks like the top layer has peeled off.
        How much does it weigh?

          BThad,
From what I can tell it looks to be plating issues... In the 3rd pic I can see where the plating has pulled from the area next to the rim... Just above the "L" the shape on the right appears to match exactly with the shape closer to the rim... It also appears that some of the copper plate has flaked away... That must have been a serious hard strike!!!

That was one of my impressions too.

For the rest, this is a copper cent, not a Zincoln.

Struck through harden grease. Here is another example of that condition.

I think this would be another example.

From all appearances, it would be impossible to find a high-grade struck through grease error.

It's a bird! It's a plane! Aw nuts... It's merely two die scratches!

How is it that the L is so well struck on my coin if there was hardened grease on the die?

I just looked at your coin again, and I don't think it's been struck through anything. It looks like something sitting on the surface to me, like wax or some clear, gooey salve. Did you try some Verdi-care on it?
