I've never seen one quite like this. What do you think?
Planchet issue, lamination or other?

It looks sort of like there was something hard stuck to the die, like hardened grease. If it were the planchet I would think the surface anomaly wouldn't be confined to just the field with it not occurring onto the design rim too.

BThad,
From what I can tell it looks to be plating issues... In the 3rd pic I can see where the plating has pulled from the area next to the rim... Just above the "L" the shape on the right appears to match exactly with the shape closer to the rim... It also appears that some of the copper plate has flaked away... That must have been a serious hard strike!!!

That was one of my impressions too.
For the rest, this is a copper cent, not a Zincoln.VERDI-CARE™ ALL METAL CONSERVATION FLUIDComment

Struck through harden grease. Here is another example of that condition.

I just looked at your coin again, and I don't think it's been struck through anything. It looks like something sitting on the surface to me, like wax or some clear, gooey salve. Did you try some Verdi-care on it?Wendell Carper
It's a bird! It's a plane! Aw nuts... It's merely two die scratches!
