    1924-D Lincoln cent '' X'ed '' ????????

Why in the world would anyone do this? It is not a fake from what I can see. Weight and size are fine too. I'm still keeping it although it's just worth a cent.

It's worth more than a cent in my opinion.

I agree, worth more than a cent. I would guess someone was just fooling around when they X'd it...

It is actualy worth app. 2.4 cents, if you melted it.

Using the latest metal prices and the specifications above, these are the numbers required to calculate melt value:
        $3.5840 =copper price / pound on Sep 24, 2010..95 =copper %$0.9982 =zinc price / pound on Sep 24, 2010..05 =zinc %3.11 =total weight in grams.00220462262 =pound/gram conversion factor (see note directly below)

The NYMEX uses pounds to price these metals, that means we need to multiply the metal price by .00220462262 to make the conversion to grams.

        1. Calculate 95% copper value :

        (3.5840 × .00220462262 × 3.11 × .95) = $0.0233442

        2. Calculate 5% zinc value :

        (0.9982 × .00220462262 × 3.11 × .05) = $0.0003421

        3. Add the two together :

        $0.0233442 + $0.0003421 = $0.0236863

$0.0236863 is the melt value for the 1909-1982 copper cent on September 24, 2010.

Looks like it was a engraving machine that made the mark but the way it jumps mm by mm.

U.S. copper cent melting still prohibited by federal law. Exporting more than $5.00 also not permitted by law.

Listening to NPR news, and the way they talk, metals are only going to go up and up in value, as the government continues to devalue the dollar. I wouldn't be surprised to see copper cents go way over a nickle. Then the government will gather and melt them....

It's a shame when the government doesn't follow its own rules.
