    Parallel Lines (1989d and 2008d)

    Happy Saturday, Folks.

I have a question regarding these parallel lines that are very often seen on LC's. We know a bit about lathe lines (circular, centered somewhere, etc...) But what about these..? I've posted 2 pics... one of a 2008d and the other of a 1989d. They both have these very obvious parallel lines running the entire width and most of the vertical (???) length of the coin, but in addition, they both have 2 or 3 "stronger" (deeper, it appears) cuts that run in the same direction.

    Question: What makes these marks..?

Thanks for reading and all comments and ideas (especially the correct ones... LOL) are welcomed.

    Have a great day.

Probably Roller Marks on the planchet that were not obliterated during the strike. Sometimes a small amount of grease on the die face will enhance the effect.

Again, struck through grease...correct? The lines are more regular, I would imagine the sheet metal was scraped by something before being punched and the strike didn't obliterate the lines. A nice example.

Nice 1992 strike thru grease error, BadThad.

It's a bird! It's a plane! Aw nuts... It's merely two die scratches!

Exactly! My guess is the planchet metal was not rolled smoothly, perhaps debris on the roller impressed the lines. The reverse is normal.
