I don't see anything that jumps out as a fake. May have been cleaned. The surface looks like it was messed with in the past.

It looks close to me. The rev and obv matches up. The only thing is I can't blow up the S to see the dot.

Everything looks fine to me, although the PSD isn't a plus. I actually think it wasn't a bad deal for $1000, but that's just my opinion. The reverse has the correct slant for B in VDB and the N of UNITED has the proper features. The obverse has the mintmark in good position and correct style and all other features are consistent with 1909. Therefore, I'd say that it was real, just a damaged coin.

But then, I'm not an expert with counterfeits, only having handled one China counterfeit personally.
