Interesting Coin | wrong planchet error

This is cool but I would be weary without certification https://www.ebay.com/itm/1951-Philad...cAAOSwv2xdgd0l

I would assume it is not what the seller says.
A cent can't be struck on a nickel planchet in collar because it won't fit.
If it was struck on a silver dime planchet it will be thin or not as full details like this one looks and be dime weight.
I've never heard of them using CN stock for a cent and the only CN stock in 1951 (other than non US) would be nickel stock and it would be thick and off in weight and that does not look the color of a nickel. There are known quarters on dime stock, cents on dime planchets, nickels on cent planchets, quarters on cent or nickel planchets but the key thing is they get struck on a smaller (not larger) planchet and the only CN in 1951 would be a nickel so it's not credible without weight or some proof.

I would assume it's plated or mercury coated or some environmental issue changed the color.

If a person wants to sell something like that raw they should at least weigh it and that the weight is off or I give it no credibility.

The same seller also listed this https://www.ebay.com/itm/Cent-Lincol...QAAOSwNjJdgeeI a doubled die D? Now Im sure that its not a legit planchet error. The seller would have to post the weight like you said Ed for me to be convinced.

This one probably got into a batch of steel cents that were getting replated "after mint". It has that look to it.

The 89D is corrosion under the plating... Eventually the MM will fall out leaving a crater!!!

The pics are a little to blurry on the 51 but to me it looks normal... Like Ed said some sort of environmental issue changed its toning... It does look as if it is a woodie but with the poor pic???

What you have to do is educate yourself in exactly everything else seller is selling. Almost everything for sale is foreign coins, currency, etc... few American stuff. Then Notice stuff is for sale from either France or Australia. I personally wouldnt bid on it for it does raise some red flags to me. Not the coin itself because I cant tell but what he is selling and where from. Almost all foreign sellers but not all are clueless when it comes to American coins etc.....
Life is not about greatness but on the impact of good onto others. It is a matter of how much one shines. Explains why I like shiny coins.

Great points. Always look at a sellers other items. If the one that got your attention is in doubt then you see in other listings that they are selling a lot of other stuff that clearly isn't what they said, that's enough to make me pass on their items.
