Hi all, I joined this forum about 4 days ago and didn't realize what I was missing. Really enjoying everyone on here, very good information.
I was first introduced to coins when I was about 3 or 4 years old, one of my first memories. I found either a Half Dollar or maybe even an Eisenhower, wish I still had it now. I remember it being the Largest coin I had ever seen. I also remember my parents talking about the U.S. was removing silver from coinage, so were talking around 1964 or 65. Then about 5 years later, still being a little kid, I found a cent that was unusually "shiny" for it's date. I asked my mom about it but only remember being told it was cool but coin collecting is for kings as kings were the only ones who could afford it. LOL
Years passed (about 35 yrs) until around 2002, I went to a local auction and in a box of "junk" I found a couple very cleaned and warn War Nickels. Later, I was laying on the floor, remembered the nickels and located a magnifying glass. That was pretty cool so, about that time, I began looking through cents. Back then, I'd go through about a box a week. Over time I've become "addicted" to the hobby. (Wife thinks I'm nuts, probably some truth to that.) LOL Later yet, I started going to the local coin shows here in Pittsburgh (Monroeville, PA) where I started gathering loupes, books and finding interesting varieties/errors. I'm quite sure over the past 15 or so years, I've viewed over a million cents. For the first few years, I'd go through a box a week. Back then prior to the latest silver increase, you could locate silver halves too so I did some of that as well. Those were the days when I could buy a Morgan for about $9, pretty cool but the $9 Morgans are gone too.
I just wonder how many varieties I've seen that I didn't have the education to identify in those earlier years. Joining this forum has really brought back the fun to this hobby (not to say that I lost it). In any case, I want to thank everyone on here for my renewed enthusiasm.
In any case Good Luck and glad to be able to share my finds as well as see others finds. Again, Thank you!!!
