missing plating found roll searching.
Cant get the missing area to show how it really looks in hand. 101_1817.jpg
In hand the exposed zinc has full luster.
Interesting; hard to determine if the plating was partial pre-strike or if something removed the plating later. The color and surface quality suggest it is partially plated, nevertheless, the additional areas showing the coin was in contact with some agent that promoted corrosion worries me; it could be coincidental. Mike D. might be the best person to have chime in on this thread. BTW what does the reverse look like?
the reverse was really dirty and you right it was in partly in contact with somthing to cause corrosion. But in hand the exposed zinc is fully stuck and has full luster it just doesn't show well in photos. when I first fond it I was thinking that that the copper had been removed but after studying it for awhile and cleaning the reverse finding full plating on the reveres I was pretty sure it was plating issues. It's not a great find but it is interesting,
It is really hard to say from pictures. I have both a partial unplated and completely unplated. I have also examined about 12 that were either plated, had the copper removed by various means or had the color altered in such a manner as to suggest it was unplated (or composed of another metal). The partial unplated has a particular character under a scope at 60x. With your example, I still feel weird that it was corroded somehow and hard to shake the felling it is related (even though it may not be)...
