Just found this today was looking through a roll penny’s got from the bank. Noticed these lines running behind the letters an the memorial. error? lines go behind united states an u can see them running behind the memorial .any ideas just starting out in the error search so any help would be appreciated
This is damage from the feeder finger on the striking machines. They inadvertently scraped across the die and left gouges which show up on coins like yours.

very interesting Bob, just as I finished reading this post, I picked up a new coin to look at and this is what I saw. Would this too be an example of this "feeder finger" action happening on my 1996? ( I hope this isn't considered 'hijacking' a thread?)
You may have to zoom for this one as I scanned the image rather than test my camera ( thanks to the tip I received )

Yep, those too are feeder finger/ejection arm scrapes.
BTW here is the only closeup I have of such scrapes...(the other arrows point to evidence the coin was struck through grease and that the die had considerable wear on the reverse).
