Error Other | what is this? 1983 D error? value?

    Hi,
Can you please tell me what kind of penny error this is, and what the value might be. Mostly I just want to know what to call it. It looks like a clash error or maybe double strike? I don't know, I'm pretty new at this. Thanks for your time.

Hi Wiserm- What you've got is known by many names- "Garage Job", "PMD (Post Mint Damage)" or Fake Error.

This coin was made by being squeezed against 2 other coins in a vice, after leaving the mint. One of the ways you can tell is that the lettering is INCUSE, meaning the opposite of raised. In addition, it's backwards, as it would look in a mirror, not as if it were struck a second time.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, as you continue to search, you'll become more adept at spotting these deceptive coins. You'll also come to learn that there are countless ways to mangle a coin and only a handful of ways that genuine errors are produced. Good luck and happy hunting!

There are a lot of these coins out there which have been pressed together. I am sure there is troy for each one, but many are probably just created by someone who is bored and a tad agitated.

That's funny Billy. Mad because he can't get it to look good enough to sell.
