Error Other | Finned Rim, Over Pressure Strike, Collar Broken/Collar Clearance

I come across this type of error once in awhile. It has a partial finned rim, however as by the title above I am unsure how this error came about. So any help or comments are appreciated and maybe MD can comment on the error. Thanks!!!!

I've found a couple of those before too. It will be nice to find out finally what caused it.

No, and I know better than not to throw out the weight as I always weigh my error coins I find in circulation: 2.5 Grams. Thanks George

Not suggesting this is the cause, but I'm curious about this scenario- On copper cents it's not uncommon to see planchets which are tapered, often punched from the end of the planchet strip. What if the zinc planchet was dramatically thicker on one side? Is zinc so soft that it'd just be pushed to the other side and even out? Or would it be more apt to squeeze out between the collar die and hammer die?

I thought it was due to excessive pressure as opposed to an issue with die clearance (and I am reasonably certain is not at related in any way to a collar-break). Of course Mike can shed some light on this (my best finned rim example came from Mike BTW).

You've got several things going on here. You do indeed have finning, which is caused by elevated ram pressure or increased localized striking pressure as the result of slight die tilt. You also have a long rim cud beginning at 2:00. Finally, there is a slight horizontal misalignment of the obverse die toward the south.

Great Mike and thanks for the summation of the error.
