Error Die Clash/Break | 1960 D small date reverse clash

    Hi All,

I finally got a chance to go back through my 1960D small date rolls to look for clashes. I found a large number of clash marks on the obverse near the date as well as numerous marks on various portions of the reverse. Attached is a pic of one of the more interesting reverse die clashes (on STATES) I found. I still need to look on maddieclashes.com to see if it is listed.

    Thanks for looking!

    Greg

I see the anomoly your talking about but dont see anything that would concider it to be a clash. Is there remnants of lettering or is it just the curved area?

Its the curved area that runs through STATES. It would be left by the lower edge of Lincoln's bust. Its similar to examples on maddieclashes...I haven't matched it up yet b/c I haven't had much time to and b/c the dies were heavily polished obscuring markers and other clash marks.

If this was a clash would not it incuse itself as well on states? It seems that it would not clash just between all the letters in states, this points to a plating issue, imho.

Remember that items raised on the coin are incused on the die... The area under STATES is the flat portion of the die face so that when it is clashed it shows between the devices that are raised on the coin... Take a look at the clashes within the memorial... They run between the columns... If for some reason the strike is with excessive force then the portions of the devices closes to the field areas will show damage... Hope this helps a little... This coin appears to be a clash from the area Greg stated but I can not really tell from the pic... It would need to be sent in!!!

That is a definite clash mark, there is no doubt about it. Hopefully i have it listed in the 1960D ADC files.

PS - there appears to be two clash events in that area.

                Thanks everyone for your comments.

Yes BJ, I do believe there are two clash events going on in the area. One is through the middle of STATES and the other runs through STATES closer to the rim. The only die I saw with two clash events on maddieclashes was #22. When I get home I'll compare my coin with that listing. From what I remember, I didn't see any other clashes on the coin just heavy polish marks/lines.

FYI, I also found some coins that had strong clash events that showed up in bay 6 of the memorial. Maybe I missed them, but I didn't see any dies listed with clash marks there.
