Error Other | Have fun and describe this error #12

KOOL LOOKING COIN!!!! I found this coin in a brick today.

Take a few minutes and have some fun and see if you can tell us what you think is going on with this Coin.

I was perplexed also until it was explained to me.....

No, it did not go through a heavy duty dryer cycle either.

That is the enough variety. It happens when I hit $25 worth of searching and don't find anything. Sorry, I lose control sometimes

Looks like it may have been subjected to a big jolt of electricity. That would be my guess but I really have no clue. Interesting coin, none-the-less!

Don't tell me that's an error. Why? Cause I saw a whole big hoard of those awhile back from all years in from my bank rolls at a certain time. They looked exactly like that. The bank employees told me they had been recovered from a house that had burnt down. If that's not the case, I'll have to shoot myself in the foot, for I had like 100 of these go through my hands.

I would like to say that the coin might have been struck on the edge while stuck in the chamber and may have been exposed to excess heat at some point.

I would have tossed that one thinking PMD. Can't wait to see the explanation.

I did toss one with a surface like that just a few days ago. I was certain it was PMD, ie, an acid job or something. Can't wait to find out what this is.

Struck on a sintered planchet and then some how got caught in the coining chamber and made partial scrambled eggs on the edge of the coin. Hows that for a guess...

Here we go... The edge looks like a clipped planchet that also happens to have a cud... The orange peel effect looks to be from damaged dies or dies that were seriously worn... That effect may also be a strike thru cloth... As far as the drier ides I would think that a drier would not produce enough heat to cause that type of damage to a solid coin... It could to a plated coin though!!!

                        ANSWER: Courtesy of Mike Diamond

"All indications point to the swelling at the base of Lincoln's bust as being POST-STRIKE damage. The swelling coincides with damage to the edge."

"The entire obverse and reverse face show an unnatural texture, representing Chemical damage or Mechanical damage"

My guess was a defective planchet with a cud, and severely worn/deteriorated dies.

Thank You for your responses on this thread as they were interesting.

So I was right when I came across the same kind of thing and thought it was PMD and chemically changed and tossed it. Whoo, what a relief.
                          Thanks Joe.
