    Error Other | Clips Questions...

How do you tell if a clip is man made or happened via the mint?

Found this wheaty the other day, is it a true clipped cent?

    Thanks as always!

From the appearance of the ri around the clip, it certainly looks genuine to me (based on the clips I have here). Although, there are some convincing fakes, so you need to check for the Blakesley effect opposite the clip on the obverse and reverse. if the area opposite the clip shows a weakened strike, it's more then certain it's the real deal.

Normally directly across the coin from the clip is a weakness showing in the coins details. It's called the Blakesley effect
However they don't all have the effect. Good luck and lets see what the others say.

Incomplete Planchet (Clip): One can look for the Blakesley effect, an area opposite the clip that did not receive enough pressure in the upset mill to make adequate proto-rims and is slightly depressed; the way the curved area ends in a smooth transition; and if there is part of the design or motto near the effected area will often stretch a tad in the direction of the missing metal. What is shown here might be a clip - what does the reverse look like?

Here is an obverse I shot. I know I have details of the Blakesely effect and the elongated stretching near the incomplete area somewhere on my computer...

It wouldn't be close to the clip, it would be exactly opposite it as the pressure from the strike would 'fall' into the missing part of the planchet thereby leaving a slightly weakened strike opposite of the clip. Yours looks to be a genuine clip to me.

It's not a weak strike near the incomplete area, it's a slight elongation or stretching on devices near the incomplete area and the only area that might show it on your example is the wheat stalk. Being it is circulated you may not detect anything. I have some pictures I will post later...

Note areas near the incomplete planchet edges. The fading of devices.
