Error Other | 1964 Not Copper Penny What in the World?

Hello folks, I just purchased an old collection of pennies, dates on the holders in some cases go back to the 60's (as in when the person acquired the pennies.

So one of the pennies was a 1964 penny labeled "wrong color"

This thing is near perfect and almost straight up white or silver....it does stick (lightly) to a magnet...

It also weight just about perfect (slightly under) 3.09 grams

It is 99% likley that it was plated outside of the mint, especially from the rough finish on the back (at least judging from the pics)

Is this one of those poor alloy mixes that they call the 'brass' cents?

That is also a possibility, though it appears silver not brass. There are 2 reasons I belive it's plated:
        1. it sticks to a magnet
        2. the rough finish on the reverse.
The reason I am not positive, is because it looks sharp on the obverse.

Can You upload a clearer, closeup picture of the reverse please?

        Thanks,

          clearer back

i just dont know - its doesnt stick like steel, if i tip the magnet it slides off, but it will pick it up and hold it flat underneath...

I thought plating as well - but I dont know given the weight...

Also there are not any "clumps" anywhere in any edges, etc...

I do see that the steps are flat and there is a little bit of copper showing on the pillar on the side of the steps - the rim show some copper as well...but nothing looks like it will peel off....

I can even see the vdb in the lower left shoulder on Lincoln...

Then I see reference to this online - http://en.allexperts.com/q/Coin-Coll...eled-penny.htm

If its sticks to a magnet at all then its plated.
Only the 1943 steel cents and the few 1944 cents will stick.

I can promise you it's plated, I've encountered a dozen of them, they all look quite similar. If it were a separate (white) metal type, it'd have an entirely different weight.

Hi! Looks possible plated, since not until what... 1985? they still copper, not zinc. If it was a zinc core, and it had missing the copper clad layer, could be looking "silver" or white color... well... is my guessing, I am not expert (no kidding, I am not!) jeje but that is as far as my experience goes. Hope it helps!
