Error Planchet | Pre-strike damage mimicking incomplete punch

At first glance, this 1981 cent appears to have an incomplete punch error:

That's what PCGS says it is. However, the radius of curvature is too small and there is no punch mark on the reverse. It would appear to be a form of pre-strike damage that resembles an incomplete punch. I have seen one other cent with a similar form of damage.

Yikes, good call, Mike. Thanks for the heads up. That's a tricky error to assess.

I have an 81 exactly like it that couldnt be attributed as anything. The damage or whatever it is doesnt go into the rim but looks just like that and nothing on the reverse. Mine goes from about 9 oclock to 3 oclock thru the top of the hair

I have the same thing too. Maybe it's just a perfectly curved wire? Here's the link to mine (pics 2-4)- http://www.lincolncentresource.net/f...ad.php?t=19183

Any comments on that one, Mike D.? As said, it's only present on one side.

This curved blemish looks qualitatively different from the Teletrade coin and my specimen. Your curved grooved is shallower and doesn't appear on the design rim. It only appears in the field (and not on the letters), which is puzzling. It could be post-strike damage. I'd need to see it under high magnification to make a determination.

Here's the issue of Errorscope with my article on a 1980 cent with damage similar to the Teletrade coin. I'm not sure the link will work for non-members, but give it a go:

Nice example of pre-strike damage mimicking an incomplete punch.
