Good afternoon! I am Will currently in the Navy. Recently I found a mint error 1956D and I am not sure what type it is. Thank you!

That is an ex-encased coin. It was a "lucky cent" someone put in a holder called a bezel and worn as "jewelry." It got removed and put back into circulation. It is not a mint error. It was damaged after the mint. Sorry, but welcome to the LCR!!

These ex-encased cents get everyone once. They sure look like a variety of errors, but alas, they are not. Keep up the hunt, the next one might be fantastic.
