Error Other | #22 dial marked reverse

A mint error in which the die cleaner either dropped the reverse die onto a small hand die buffer or it was left in the press and crushed into the die before making a few coins. You will see the impressions of a tool dial here with the numbers 22 showing which could be 2200 rpm on the dial.
I have been busy lately but wanted to share this 1974-D reverse with you. Will get better pics later.

    Enjoy --- Rick

If you think it was a different type of tool impressed into the die --- let me know.

Sorry about the mistake in the date for the heading. Tried to correct and only created another thread. I'll leave it at a wrap.

I could go along with "struck through" (I guess), but to get specific with the "buffer tool" theory might be (1) a bit of a tough sell... and (2) of little relevance. Either way, I think it would just be a "struck through"... if that is indeed what we have here.

Interesting, though. Let's hear what others think. Nice find.

Looks like a die gouge, as it is raised but does not obstruct the columns.

I'm not quite sure what the "22" is....I think it may be random gouges, but the pictures would need to be much closer to say anything for sure.

I think if the dies actually struck a tool like that, there would be more catastrophic damage.
It's really hard to say how it happened but something gouged the die.
