          I think that whole area must be recessed not raised. On my screen it looks raised but it must be an optical illusion.

          Neat coin!

            If it is incuse, it would surely be even a more curious anomaly. I think it is raised though. The light in the picture is coming, primarily, from the N/NE. If it were incuse, the N and NE leading edge of the anomaly should be dark and it is not in this picture. Likewise, the W and SW area by the rim should be lit and it is dark. Unless I'm wrong about the direction of the light, the anom has to be raised.

              If it was a raised area like a cud where the section of the die is gone then the reverse opposed to that area would be weak like a major cud but it's not weak. They called it a struck thru so I'm assuming it's a recessed area from whatever it was struck through and in the photo it looks raised but it's an illusion.

                Good observation about the reverse Ed. I think I have to agree that it must be incuse.
