    1971 reverse error?

Hello again all, I have another question I have not been able to find another example like this so I'm not sure how this happened, my best barely educated guess is somehow a vibration happened or the coin moved while being struck? I am really working on taking better photos, coins are a challenge! I'm learning so much reading all the posts, thanks so much for your input!

My guess is a form of die deterioration, but I haven't seen any quite like this before. Looking at your photo of the reverse, it looks like this is also going on at the base and top of the Memorial building. Is that the case? Do you have photos of those areas?

    Thanks,

    Jody

Hi Jody, thank you for the comment. The entire reverse is affected in this way, almost all the lettering especially. I will try to get a couple photos that show better all of the weirdness going on. When looking at it closely it almost appears that there is "reeding" on some of the lettering as well.

Have not seen one quite like that either but agree with die deterioration. Possibly accompanies by some MD.

I think it is die deterioration and md mix also but not really sure... Maybe Bob or Mike Diamond would know for sure!!!

I would agree with the general consensus of MD and die deterioration. I can't say I have ever seen one this severe though. It's pretty nice!

Thanks so much everyone, I will get a couple more photos of this up soon, ( very frustrating trying to get good clear images!) regardless of "what" it is, I think it's kinda cool.. and I love hearing that it is not something you all see everyday

It's also interesting because there's that 71 with the well known abrasion doubling on the obverse that is severe and not something I see on other coins. Probably not related to this but since it's the same year it made me say hmmmmm.

Ok, sorry for the avalanche of photos, any tips to capture better images is appreciated as well. I hope these photos will help me understand how this occurred. It's a fun one to look at imho. Thanks so much for the replies, you are all really helpful and I so appreciate it!

Something is going on with this coin beyond simple deterioration. I don't know if it's some sort of stutter strike or what. Hopefully Mike Diamond will see this thread and chime in. The only thing I don't like the look of are the surfaces, but that might just be the images. There are areas that almost look like what we see with a cent that's been exposed to an acid, and I've seen acid create a doubled look before.

Altered outside the Mint. A "rippled" coin.

                              Mike,

Is the rippled effect achieved with acid?
