1952 D Flying "D"? Die chip in mint mark

There are several dates that exhibit this phenomena and they have all become whimsically known as "flying D's." At least that's the most common term I have heard for them and the one I use for them in any of my auctions. Your coin, is the nicest of the known dies that I have seen and I have seen it sell for up to $50 on eBay. Yes, it's just a die chip, but people really seem to go for this stuff, all while the true DDO or RPM varieties languish at pennies on the dollar

What's interesting is, if I hadn't been looking around on this site, I never would have known about it. "flying D's. has a nice ring to it, I'll look for more of these. I'm very glad I found www.lincolncentforum.com I'm always learning something new here. Thank you for all the information that you have given me, it really helps..............DanComment

Nice one. Yours is very similar, even the same date, to the ones we used in the glossary entry:
Flying D: A colloquialism used on the forum for a D mint mark which has die chip to the west making the D look like it has a wing or is in motion. These are often associated with a common die crack coming off the bottom tail of the 9 in the date and arcing back into the mint mark. Images donated by Barzilla and Keith.

The this last week was a good one for me, I had the 1952 D "flying D's ", the nice 1968 s MD, found a 1924 D, a 1957 d quarter with D in branches, and a 1973 S double die proof IKE dollar in a proof set. Not to bad for a beginner. I will keep an eye out for your coin, Thanks...................DanComment

I think the Ds are fairly common. About a year or so back I started saving them along with early stages and beginnings of the die cracks. I think I have a tube of them somewhere.Comment

I have only found three examples of the 1952-D that Dan posted, so those are not very common in my experience and I do watch for them. As a whole, given all the dates they appear on, I agree with George that they are fairly common.
I can say that Dan's example appears to be the latest die state (with the largest "flying D" chips) of any that I have seen. Some of them only have the upper curved chip to start and are not as dramatic. I bet you could get at least $20 on eBay for it, which makes it a great find in my book. Of course, I sell all of these I find and put the $$ into what I care about - RPM's and doubled dies

That's very pleasing to hear, so the one I have out of the flying "D's"is most likely the most uncommon one. Sounds good to me. As you can tell by my Rep Power, I'm still new at this but learning every day,and admittedly I have never sold on Ebay before, wouldn't even know how to start. It might interest you to know that I'm not a young man anymore. I got out of the Navy in 1966. I started this hobby because I had bypass surgery on my right leg, and while in the hospital after surgery I had a heart attack, so they checked my heart out and found it was blocked 95% so then I had emergency surgery, a triple bypass. The doctor said I was not to lift anything over 10 lbs, and so the hobby began then. about 3 years ago. But don't tell anyone. Thanks for your response....................DanComment

You are doing just fine Dan... It takes a while to learn all the ins and out of coins... Even those that have been coin collecting for 40 plus years still do not know it all... There is always something new to learn... I found my Flying A coin... Turns out it was not what I expected... I did a closer look and it turned out to be some sort of glue... Put it in some acetone for about an hour and it disappeared
Oh well maybe next time around I will find one
