Error Die Clash/Break | 1983P Unusual Abraided Die

Nothing of significance here, can't even find evidence of a clash. But this abrasion seems unusual. Strange that the rest of the coin is not that heavily abraided and I think if there was evidence of a clash I would see it. Only thing I see is some kind of raised area in the second and third bays. Somebody went crazy with the new die abrasion tool, I guess

That is unusual. Might be some other source of damage to the die.

The mint did some serious work on that die... Worn it down so much the columns are uneven... Did you try the tooth pick test??? It looks as if the plating is beginning to peel away from the core in bays 5 - 8???

Thank you Jim! I wondered about plating blisters since this coin has obvious plating issues, but to me it looks more like scratches from a die polishing tool.

I agree it is from very extreme die polishing to remove clash remnants. The obverse seems to have been changed out, since it doesn't appear to show the same issues.

I have a cent struck by the same die pair. This is some sort of patterned die damage. I can't assign a specific cause.

Thank you everyone for taking a look! And thank you Mr. Diamond as well, and for giving us your assessment! My imagination/thoughts went to an unskilled mint worker, or one with allergies that kept sneezing every time he/she touched the die with the polishing tool. Don't we all wish we had the inside scoop on things like this
