Error Other | 1968 S cent with R pushed into rim

Is this an error or just wear from circulation? The R in TRUST being pushed against the rim and looking wrong. Also the L and the I in LIBERTY being so close in the word LIBERTY. I think the L in LIBERTY is just PMD. What do you guys think?

That's pretty much normal for the year....and part of the reason the design was enhanced in 1969

Generally speaking, it's always a good idea to compare another cent or two of the same year when you notice something a little bit off, but not an obvious error or variety. There have been quite a lot of changes through the years that nobody notices except us coin geeks

Put that 68 next to a 69 and look at how different it is. You won't need a loupe.

On the 69 the motto moves away from the rim. The bust is flatter and has more details like the hair and face of the original early cents and the whole coin is more detailed and seems to have less relief. It's so drastic you will see it from a few feet away. Look up the ODVs and check out the big changes. For me the next shocking change is midyear in 1982 where everything changes again, the 1982 LD changing to SD marks the next easy to see change almost as big as the changes from 68-69.

When searching rolls as I dump out a roll the 68 cents often catch my eye because from a glance the bust looks like it might be a late date wheat cent.

I did compare them earlier today. Lol! That's exactly what I noticed! There is a huge difference. I also compared it to other 1968 cents and they are the same. I have never noticed any of that before today. Very interesting. The 1980's seem to have went through a couple changes to me. I have seen the difference in the 1982 as well. I will be more aware of the differences now. Thank you for the good advice.

If you look at my past contests, this is exactly the sort of thing I put in there in the "guess the date" questions.
