Error Die Crack | Clipped Spiked Head

I got this last night at our local coin clubs Christmas Party. Every year at the party one of the local coin dealers, Hallenbeck Coin Gallery, gives out a gift bag with a number of coins to all members and their wives. This clipped spike head was in the bag my wife got. It’s a match to Cohen Index 44-87 on page 214. It was in a 2x2 marked "Clipped". Not only was it clipped it had two neat die cracks.

I listed it on COC as SKH-1c-1944-10.

Sweet find! I have alluded in the past about starting a dual variety/error collection (I'm up to 5 coins on that). Now, you've got me thinking about starting a new page for mint error's. Qualifications for entry: at least two different mint error's on the same coin. I'd probably only add a few coins a year to it, but it would be something else to keep my OCD at bay! Happy searching and happy holidays!! Cheers to Hallenbeck Coin Gallery as well! I will have to check them out!!

Nice present... It looks as if the PLU has a combo of circ wear and missing detail due to the clip or is it just my eyes???

I think it's because of the Blakesley Effect on the coin. " Weakness in the rim area directly across from the “clip” on a clipped planchet. The absence of the clipped part of the planchet prevents the rim area across from the clip from being fully formed in the upset mill. This is because where the metal is missing, the upset mill has nothing to push against to create a full rim on the opposing end of the coin."

Wow, what an excellent gift...the SpikeMaster gets a dual error!
