Found this interesting rev. marking. Seems like a insects wing impressed into coin. Have no clue, can use feedback.

Can you tell if the anomaly is incuse (sunk into the coin surface) or protruding above the surface of the coin?
More than likely it is an adhesive of some kind stuck to the back. Some people used an adhesive to keep the coin from falling out of the blue cardboard coin holder/books.
Soaking in acetone will probably remove it if an adhesive.
Also years ago they would apply a clear coating to the surface to help keep it red. Maybe a wing did get stuck to the coating.
BTW- What year is your memorial cent?

That is interesting... I agree with Petespockets' theory but just want to add that the insect wing appears to go on top of the devices at the word ONE, best I can tell. I'm thinking it was either a random happening or someone put it on there just to make us coin enthusiasts scratch our heads.

edit... just saw that Mike has it posted as a 1972
did some research to see if insect wings were used as a counter stamp, didn't see any examples but I did find one thing kind of interesting. If you find a coin in your path, look at it's year and see if that year is important between you and a deceased loved one or some other event or happening. I hesitated to type that because I'm not into hoodoo voodoo or anything like that but I am American Indian and I believe the spirit world is all around us. I wouldn't soak it in acetone, just keep the coin for the novelty of it!

Zoomed in to 400%... Looks like it is over the top of the ON of ONE so I would say an adhesive... Could have like petespockets said about the insect wing... I'm with Vivien on leaving... Makes the coin very interesting!!!

Thanks Jim for not thinking I'm too weird LOL... just when strange things happen, if you look, sometimes you will find there is a meaning behind it. I think it is a cool find, definitely unique!

Question Mike. An insect wing being fragile, would it effect the strike to the extent exhibited on this specimen? also, would the heat created by the strike not pulverize the wing before it had a chance of making an impression?

It looks like it's either considerably raised or incuse, I can't tell which from the pic.
That needs to be verified.
I think a wing would be thin.

If it is a wing, that would be a neat error

Insect wings are thin, but stiff, at least in beetles, wasps, dragonflys, etc. Their outline and the pattern of their hardened veins could conceivably leave an impression in a coin.

I was thinking the same as Roller but it makes sense when you consider that a soft cloth thread can create an error also.
