    2000-P Jefferson Nickel

Please let me know your thoughts 💭

I’m questioning this coin that had me at hello “hi I’m weird” — so I pulled it for its color and just eye appeal because it’s well..got me duh what error is this? So I finally found a link and this looks kinda like it.

I like how how they state in one of the paragraphs “the US mint has not had one yet!”

I’m a newbie and googled my life and I finally found the closest I think this could be? Let me down gently, lol! I also have a JFK
1970 Silver Proof coin (I’m chalking that one up to PMD) with lines like such but not this dense ...

this is where I found my info:

    Part III. Die Installation Errors:
Use of Canceled and Defaced Dies

That is cool looking... To me it almost looks like PSD but I am not totally sure... If it were PSD that heavy I would think the high spots of the devices such as the hair and the building would be completely ground down... Your pics are a little blurry when I zoomed in... We will see what some of the pros think... You have got me stumped on this one... Good job!!!

Added... Looking at this again the rims appear some what affected leading me to think PSD from a wire brush!!!

What does the coin weigh? It does look like post mint damage (PSD).

We'll move this to the error forum where Mike Diamond might take a look.....my first thoughts were PSD, but it doesn't seem to affect the rims

My thoughts as well. Also the C of CENTS on the reverse should have been wiped away werer this PSD.
Just a guess at this point but the dies could have come together with something other than a planchet in between them and these could be massive die dents.
Two cancelled dies used together is a bit out there.

            John
So sad ... My reverse consumption engine was a broken fuel gauge ... gonna look at coins now. John

It sure looks scratched up to me. But that's what I first thought about my one and only example of a coin struck by defaced dies. Feel free to send it to me for an examination. -- Mike

                Thank you very much Mike!

Coin Faerie, you can private message Mike.

Go to "Notifications" then "In Box", then "Send New Message" in the "Recipient Users" type in mikediamond and that will pop up, click on that and continue with your private message so you can get the address to send it to him if you would like to do that.

I found a 1970-S JFK Silver Proof coin that shared not as dramatic of scratches but they seemed to be isolated and linear. I chalked it up to be POST MINT DAMAGE, but upon looking closer and having the nagging voice in my head tell me otherwise..

this is where my thought process went with why/how this came to be (in my brain only of course)...I don’t know how the frosty part of a Proof coin gets there with such fine precision — but I thought of the process in my head no reference check just thought processing...i figured the process the same as a sewing machine and what would happen if the needle went bezerk crazy, since everything is automated nowadays. I’ve worked 13 years in a gross anatomical path lab - I’ve seen it all (inside and out) .. my automated machines go crazy all the time there As well.. and that’s why we have controls and manual checks for quality.

Never say never in my book (karma) ... thank you all again and thanks a bunch Viv I read a post of yours today and purchased my scope/camera ... good night

Maybe you should also send Mike the proof coin so he can take a look at it also!

I had to laugh at myself (again) because I was trying to figure out what the letters MAHALO stood for.
ie: LOL, ROFL etc., when I realized it was Hawaiian for thank you.

Cool... Way to go CF (CoinFaerie)... Mike Diamond is the pro on these errors... If it were mine I would send it to him for an in hand look... He will be able to tell us for sure what it is... As a newbie you are doing a great job... The fact you were able to find a reference to a possible rare mint error is better than what I could do as a newbie!!!
