Error Die Clash/Break | 1985P Die Clash with what looks like copper plating peeling off Obverse

This die clash caught my attention because it looks like it was cut with a cookie cutter - it's deep.

Then I noticed what looked like the split end of Lincoln's bow tie in the bay to the right of the statue. After doing an overlay, there's no way that is the split of the bow tie. Maybe the collar?

Also, the copper plating on the obverse looks like it's peeling off like sunburn. You can see where the polishing scratches continue through where it has peeled off. Wonder if the heavy die polishing on the die causes the plating to be weakened and contributes to the plating peeling off like this? (it's a weird color underneath)

Jim, please critique my overlay. I used my own coin (this one with the die clash) to do the overlay. Maybe I should have taken photos of a different 85P. What do you do?

You have a lot going on there Viv!! That's a cool looking deep clash and very nice work on the overlay!

Thank you very much Jon! This one is rotated some, but not enough to be a thing

Just curious if you think a soak in acetone might reveal something about the "peeling".
If nothing happens it might be oxidation that is flaking.

Nice clash... Overlay looks pretty good... Try darkening the image of the underlying coin, in my software it is called "Reduce Back Lighting"... In this case your rev pic... When you place the transparency over the darkened image you will be able to see a much better contrast between the areas you are trying to align... I also try to always use the same coin... Sometimes when you do the overlay things will show up that you didn't realize was there!!!

Thank you Cliff! Well, I ran out of acetone or I would have already tried it. I don't know anything about oxidation except that Oxi Clean works great on dirty laundry

You are exactly right! If the image in the background were darker it would be easier to see the top one! Okay cool, you use the same coin too. By doing so with this overlay it helped me match up the die clash better and it helped me look for other clash marks that I might have missed also! I really appreciate your help Jim!
