Error Die Clash/Break | 1987P can an IDB fall off?

To me this looks like a small IDB that is trying to fall off. Can they do that? Or did it just take a hit?

Thank you Jon, but I think it's still there, just about to fall off. I don't know, I've never seen one separated like that unless it got bumped and separated?

I thought there was an area just west of the spot you're talking about where part of it fell off. It just looked like an rounded shadow of what was there.

An IDB is not surficial it is part of the planchet and anchored in the coin. It cannot fall off.

Thank you very much Roller! So this is a crack in the plating? or a hit?

Maybe it's all a plating bubble with torn plating then zinc rot, I'm not sure if there was also an IDB or if the bump is all lifted/bubbled plating.

Thank you Ed for looking! I've found IDB's in that spot and it looks like die cracks to the right of it, but I've never seen any kind of split plating next to an IDB so maybe this is the first? Could very well be zinc rot pushed that area up, it's hard though, not really like a plating blister.

If there was and IDB, they can be pretty sharp so that might help the plating crack. Can't really tell if it started as an IDB with a plating crack then zinc rot moved in or if it was only a plating issue and zinc rot moved in.

Looks like some split plating had a bit of zinc rot going then got kicked up and displaced the metal east... There is some split plating visible on the top west side of C1... You also have a nice crack on C1 running up the west edge of the roof and a crack on C2... Unless the the IDB had developed zinc rot, much like some of the MMs that fall out leaving a crater, then it wouldn't fall off!!!

Thank you all for looking and helping! Ed and Jim, I forget that sometimes zinc rot is below the surface and we don't always see it. Makes perfect sense! Also like Roller said, it won't fall off, unless what Jim says happens with the zinc rot (and it falls off like some MM's do) Problem solved! You guys are great!!!
