Error CUD | 1983 Retained Cud "Very Neat"

I wanted to share this one. It's in the collect of Marvin L. Young and was a new listing last month. I received permission from him to post the images on the forum.

That is cool looking... Just about to be a full blown cud... With portions of the devices missing those areas must have been gone already??? There are strong portions on the field for the CE and then the large section missing then more of the CE!!!

                That is impressive.
And is my understanding correct that most reverse die retained cuds do not progress to full cuds because of their position as the hammer die and the collar die helps keep any die pieces from falling away?
                Thanks in advance. Cliff

I believe you are rite on the money... Pieces of the die may have been getting kicked out of the strike chamber on each strike other wise there would be strike thrus on the coin???

But in this case aren't all the pieces of the hammer (reverse) die still in place, just "sunken" down away from the rest of the die surface?

Edit: Just noticed there appears to be signs of a clash behind Lincoln's head and in bays 3&4 on the reverse.

There are pieces missing... That is why areas of the letters on CENT are missing... The metal from the coin is flowing to fill the holes left from the missing pieces of die... There may also be more die missing than meets the eye since the retained cud is raised the metal had to flow into those area during the strike... Notice how WE TRUST is washed out... There is also clash marks between the jacket and date (roof top)... Hope that helps a little!!!

Oh yeah, noticed the weakness of WE TRUST.
Wonder if it's possible any of the missing die pieces ended up getting embedded in a coin during a subsequent strike?

I've wondered if anyone ever found a chunk or fragment of die in a bag of coins.

I'm guessing most of the time it shows up as struck through a fragment, if the equipment even continues to produce coins.
