Hey Will! Nice to see you! I wish that we had all of the pros and everyone else to follow suit on the findings of your trail die study and subsequent Coin World article! I guess something of this nature with so many unknowns that have been puzzling from the onset when trails were first thought to be doubled dies, just takes time to sort through. I was not sure if you included the design extension anomaly "Dimples" in your study, but I don't think you did as I believe Dimples look more like a die deterioration issue than from die abrasion. What were your thoughts on this?

I think this coin has little to do with trails or anything like that, this was done after the die was in use.
No way to prove the reason they did it but I can imagine a clogged die and they sort of scraped the clog out of the columns.
My reasoning is, why else would they polish in the columns, no clashing or anything would be in the columns so being plugged with a clog seems like a possibility.Comment

Thank you Ed for this explanation, I concur. The reason trail dies got brought up is, Earl asked about it possibly being a column extension, back in his very first post.I think this coin has little to do with trails or anything like that, this was done after the die was in use.
