Well Will... I was hoping that you would answer that question! But... it leads me to think that the obverse lines are in fact lathe lines and the reverse lines are not. The only stumbling block that I have is the reverse lines are strong and symmetrical on many examples as opposed to light and broken on others that we know are from die polishing.
Also... it could be that the actual lathe lines get closer together toward the center of the die.Comment

Perfect analysis. Both possibilities. Now where do you go from here?Well Will... I was hoping that you would answer that question! Now ladies and gentlemen... I would like to turn the floor over to Will Brooks, Die & Design Expert, LCF Glossary Author and Author of numerous Coin World articles, just to mention a "few" of his recent accomplishments!
(while I go brew another pot of coffee and try to think harder on this one) LOL! Thank you Will!Comment

Will... I would like to mention this. The reverse lines on the example shown on errorvariety.com at "AM" are significantly closer together than they are on the obverse example.
Coffee is ready!Comment

No no no. I am busy right now. You got this. Time to fly, little birdie. Now ladies and gentlemen... I would like to turn the floor over to Will Brooks, Die & Design Expert, LCF Glossary Author and Author of numerous Coin World articles, just to mention a "few" of his recent accomplishments!

LOL Will, you crack me up! You're not too busy... you are just getting my brain to stretch a little bit more!
Okay... little birdie says... considering the fact that the die is cone shaped it seems to me that any lathe lines that may have been left in the center of the die (not polished smooth before hubbing) would be obliterated during the strike, leaving only the outside edges of the lathe lines visible. Therefore, if that is correct, what we are seeing on the reverse of these examples is actually from die polishing with a rotary tool. I would think that rotary tools are used so inconsistently, at different angles, with different pressures, with new brush attachments and old attachments, that a new brush held at a consistent angle, with consistent pressure in the same spot, could produce these concentric lines that we are seeing on the reverse and they are not lathe lines.
now... little birdie just flew out the window

No. I am struggling with organization of the MMS4/9 article. You pointed out how the striations article didn't flow right either. 2 steps forward, 1 step back = progress. All opinions expressed are not necessarily shared by willbrooks or his affiliates. Holy cow what happened here while I was gone!! Viv and Will figuring out all the worlds problems while I'm just working my butt off dealing with a dumptruck full of stupid at work today!
So, in a nutshell, we have the little bird flying off becoming a big bird and the big bird with a full plate. Does that cover what I missed here?

Re-watching the Soprano's and that helps a lot too! Will will be alright, he's a Big Bird, hah! I do know he has a lot on his plate and really appreciated him taking time to look at this coin though, he knows that too or he would not have done it. You can take over my post anytime Viv, you are my Ambassador and teacher and will always bow to you!
