What do you guys think about this? It’s extremely interesting isn’t it? I think it’s weird looking because it looks like somebody had fun marking it up on Lincoln and the edge, but not in the field nor on the reverse. could it be some kind of a tool or something?Comment

I would not have a clue Sheila. When I find one like this, I just like to imagine how it could have happened, given it's date and what was going on or after that time frame. Maybe a man in a foxhole or a kid at his school desk, with a knife and maybe just face down, on a rough surface, getting stepped on multiple times.Comment

A long time ago in a galaxy far away there was a bored storm trooper
Cool looking... Looks like it could have been a thin blade screw driver??? Like Jon said it occurred a long time ago... Almost all of the pressure ridges have worn down but there are still a few hanging on in the more protected areas like at the W of WE... The individual must have gotten over boredom fairly quick as there is not as much damage to the rev!!!

Maybe it was someone who wanted to make a hobo cent but had no skill. LOL.
In a way it looks like it was a random thing, pushed onto a surface like a vise and it hit the high spots and there are signs of smushing on the rev too but a few of them did get the field and the pattern isn't consistent like a person mutilated it.Comment

This kind of reminds me of Chop marks on coins which are Chinese characters stamped onto coins by store owners or other merchants. This was used to validate the weight, authenticity and silver content of the coin. Obviously, that's not what this is here, but it did remind me of it I had an old 8 Reale coin that had what seemed like hundreds of chop marks on it.Bob Piazza
