Error Other | 2016 cent with feeder finger gouges? Not just lines.

Does this look like feeder finger gouges At the beginning of the feeder finger marks? The beginning, short part, of the lines are incuse. And the longer lines are not.

If memory serves me correctly feeder finger damage is a NW-SE direction??? Also one of our members (onecent1909) was doing some research on these die gouges about if they could be feeder finger damage or something else but he has not updated us on his findings??? If memory serves me correctly he found some info that the feeder fingers had been done away with on the new presses??? I have seen these scrapes on numerous shield cents also... Most are in the same direction as yours but there have been a few that are in the same direction as the feeder finger gouges... Here is some info from Error Ref - Accidental Die Abrasion and Die Scrapes... Here is feeder finger info from our Glossary -

Feeder Finger Damage: Damage in the form of scrapes to the anvil die which occur when the feeder finger inadvertently rubs across it. On memorial cents, these die scrapes always show on the coin in a NW to SE direction and until the mid 90s, only on the reverse of coins, as the reverse die had always been the anvil die up until that point. Inverse die installation began in the mid 90s, but thus far there are no known examples of obverse feeder finger damage on Lincoln cents. On older cents, such as this 1944S wheat pictured below, these feeder finger scrapes exhibit in a N-S direction. I am currently unaware of when the angle of the feeder finger to the die was altered. That coin and photo are courtesy of forum member Roller.

    Hope that helps a bit!!!

Added - I think yours are die gouges???

I have seen a multitude of these since I have been searching and pay little attention to them now. You will see lots of different shapes and thicknesses but they are usually in the the same place. Here is a thread from a few years ago, where Bob and John concluded that they were die gouges.

Very interesting. If they are not feeder finger lines then, I wonder what they are. I don’t normally pay any attention to feeder finger lines. But this one caught my attention.

Thanks for the link Jon... I totally forgot about that... The gouges could be from a multitude of things just no way for us to tell for sure... Looking closer at your 3rd close up the die looks to have been pitted??? Look at the inside edges of ON and there are some lines that appear to be running in the same direction??? Could be damage from an over zealous polishing???

There are no marks of any kind on, in or around the ON or any of the other letters. Nor the edge either. It looks pitted, but they are evenly spaced tiny gouge lines that extend out. The lines do not affect the shield in anyway, shape or form either.

I like it and haven't come across something this severe before either.

There seems to be a slight shift in the linear pattern in the field just to the left of the shield.
It reminds me of the effect on boards from the lumber mill that "jump" as they enter the planer so that there is a little dip or gouge in the surface of the board within 2"-3" of the end.
