Error Other | 2020 P Lincoln Shield Cent with crazy abrasions!

I've have seen a lot of Lincoln cents but never a shield that has been abraded like this one. Puts me in mind of some 80's Memorials I've seen. Have any of you seen this many die scratches on a shield?

I looked up 2020 P cents on Mad Die Clashes, thinking there would be a really good clash but none....

An interestingly odd piece. I haven't come across anything like this.

I started to wonder if maybe this is the result of an incomplete hubbing after the die stock was roughly prepped.
The letters of TRUST seems to be full with no reduction in size from polishing even though the "lines" are all around them.

I thought this to be an odd find to begin with but now am scratching my head after a statement made by someone else on a different site, I had posted this coin on.

So, were dies no longer abraded/polished after 2003? I've looked for examples of cents after that year and cannot find any.

After I thought about it, there is a variety I have found multiple times that has abrasions as a marker.

That is absolutely preposterous. Go back there and tell them I said so. EVERY DIE is polished, most of them just not poorly. Perhaps they just don't use the very harsh methods anymore like they used to remove die damage. But, they still do. This is evident by every trail die you see after that date.

I read that thread yesterday and thought that was a weird response. I know I have seen abraded clashes on shields before, I just didn’t take pictures of them to show as proof. I’m glad you mentioned trails. I didn’t even think of that or I might have posted. Probably not though. The last time I got into an argument on another forum I got permanently banned from Coin Talk.

Anyway Jon, I ran into a similarly abraded 2017-P in a bank roll this morning. The condition sucks and it isn’t quite as extreme as yours, but there are enough scratches to wipe out part of the tie and vest. The eye area is effected, along with the shoulder crease, lapel, and lower vest. Nothing in the ear and only a scratch or two on the neck. All are east/west on mine as opposed to north/south. Interesting looking coin you have. Thanks for posting!

Thanks, Jay! Very cool find on the 2017. If you don't want to start a thread, throw up a pic here.

I saw that and wondered, "is he a mint employee?" "Did he read that in some article?" "Is there some documentation he can point to?"

I like that in your responses to my queries, you've pointed me towards resources and references.

                My thanks!

But, but, but.... That's clearly impossible according to coincommunity. Don't dare call anyone out for blatant disinformation, though, because you'll get banned for not being inclusive of stupidity.

Definitely more aggressive than most shields. Never really thought about it but you just don't see it much with them.

I'm just as surprised as you that the mint has actually improved over the last 50 years. Shocking, really.

1983s come to mind... That is heavy abrasion... cool looking... Wonder if it was due to lack of people and bar stock supplies over the covid problems... Had to make due with what was available!!!
