Not real sure what I have here. My 1st thought was that its unplated or partially unplated. I read some previous threads on the subject here and on a couple of other forums, but I couldn't make a firm determination from the information.
Any opinions?
thanks,
Rock
Hi Rock,
Are you able to weigh the coin? If it is unplated it will weigh slightly less than another similar coin which you know to be intact.
That is the only way I would know for sure if a coin is missing a layer.

Common reasons a cent to look like would be: dipped in something corrosive and the plating has been removed; the coin has been plated; the coin has been treated (with heat and chemicals) in away to make the copper appear to be a silver metal.
As Jean stated weight is step one, then surface examination. If those add up I would email/PM Mike Diamond about seeing if he can verify it.
I don't have a scale but a local jeweler has weighed coins for me in the past so I'll take it there later today. I'll start with that.
I'm not an expert on surface alterations but I have seen a lot in my years and can usually tell because most of the time its pretty blatant. I'll pursue this one just so I can learn something new.
Thanks everyone for your help and comments.
