I only took notice of this coin when it wouldnt fit in my Dansco folder, it just wouldnt fit in the holes. The diameter is slightly larger than normal but it is normal weight. The texture of the coin looks a bit odd to me and it has 4 "ridges" around the rim of the coin. Any ideas what this could be?

I suppose the bumps could be PMD, they could also be Collar CUDS, but I have not seen one in person on a Lincoln yet, just a Kennedy half. Is the outer dimensions of the rim greater than normal too? I think the left side (obverse) has a slight Finned Rim...

From here it looks like you have a cent struck in a collar with four vertical collar cracks. These could have allowed the collar to spread out to a diameter that exceeds the normal range of variation. Either that, or the collar was worn and had expanded to create "wide collar error". The collar cracks could be another sign that the collar had reached the end of its useful life. In either case, it's a very unusual error. Would you consider sending it to me for a potential write-up in Coin World?Comment

Sweet find Eric. Very cool how something so simple as a forum topic gets a coin you found in Coin World!! The internet is greatComment

I believe i also have a few of those laying around here from a few years ago. When and IF i find them, i'll try and get them up here. Look almost exactly the same...Comment

I have the coin and it's everything I hoped it would be. It's a stellar example of a wide collar error and the only one I've found associated (and caused by) a series of vertical collar cracks. I guess another way of framing the diagnosis is to say that the coin has four retained collar cuds. A normal cent has a diameter of 19.05mm. The E-W diameter of this 1918 cent is 19.46mm and the N-S diameter is 19.44mm. No wonder it didn't fit into the Dansco album. I will definitely be writing this specimen up for Coin World ASAP.Comment

Wow! Thats awesome! Thank you.Comment

This is a very obscure error type and one that isn't discussed in any reference work. Eric's coin provides me the opportunity to discuss wide collar errors in general and the (now) four ways in which they can be generated. It's always satisfying when a particular specimen leads to a broader treatment of an undeservedly obscure phenomenon. I now have to dig through my collection and fish out an India 50 paise coin. As I recall, it has seven vertical collar cracks, but I never thought to check its diameter!Comment

I love it when LCR members find coins that get published! I can't wait to see the article. I always flip right to the back of my Coin World to read about the error/variety featured in the issue.Comment
