Any driving you nuts?

Not sure if this belongs here or not, but it is specifically about varieties.

The 1983 by crock28 got me to thinking. Are there any varieties that are really driving you crazy to find? They don't even have to be rare. Like the '95 for example. Seems to be a gazillion of them, yet some people have still not found any of those but have more '84 double ears than they can shake a stick at. You got any that are driving you crazy?

That '84 doubled ear is driving me crazy! I want to find one of those so bad I can't stand it. There are a few others, but that one probably tops my list. I would say a '55, 69-S, or even a the '72 "big one", but I figure I don't really stand much of a chance of finding one of those, so they don't bother me as much.

For me it always been the 1972 #1, 1983 DDR and 1984 ear. I've been looking for those since I started the hunt in 1997. Maybe because they were already listed in the books back then and were considered the primo's although there are probably better ones to be had. I can cross the 1984 off the list. I found that one last year. I made a quick visit to my moms in Northern KY and grabbed a brick form a local bank while there. It was in that brick.

Oddly enough, die anomalies (doubled dies, rpms, trail dies) tend to be area located. Example; the 1995P Lincoln cent die # 1 had a lot found done in Miami, the 2004P Peace nickel doubled die had a lot found in upper part of Florida and the west coast of Florida, the 2004 P Lincoln cent with doubled die obverse and reverse had some found in central Florida and also central Arkansas.

So, being in the right area has something to do with it. As the anomaly ages, the broader that area is. So, in the case of the 1984 doubled ear, its expanse has grown to a larger area, this side of the Mississippi and just a bit to the west of that river.

Also, a lot of the coins that do have a particular anomaly are never looked at or end up lost, or in cookie jars, or in draws, or at the bottom of lakes, rivers, oceans, etc. You get the drift.

It just takes luck to find a good die anomaly.

But, I have NOT found a 55, 69S, 72, 95... and no 84 double ear...

You bet. The 1990 1c DDO, the 1966 1c strong DDR, the 1982 1c Sm/Dt major DDR and now the 1988 1c major doubled earlobe that Chris recently discovered. As well as the 1992-P and/or D Close AM reverse.

WOW!!! That's a beauty! I have not come across one of those either. Gosh, I must have looked at tons of '84s and not one. I think BJ hit the nail on the head, depends on location and of course luck, being at the right place at the right time.

Great topic Scooby! I think everyone who's as nuts as we are can identify.

Some of the ones driving me nuts? I've cherried 1917, 25-S and 27P DDOs, All the '36s, the '41s and '42s, Nearly every one of the RPMs in the Cherrypicker's Guide, but the date that has eluded me for years and years is 1930-D, RPM #1 and #2. Also the '34 DDO showing strongly to the south and the 1947 DDO. Everything else is out there, I've seen it (including the 1951-D FS-521), but these four coins, I'm really beginning to wonder!

I think it was one day in 2008 that I discovered error/variety coin collecting and decided that I was going to do it, too. I printed a list of the top 50 DDO's RPM's and other varieties and went from there. Slowly but surely I started finding things, I think a really hideous '94 DDR-001 was the first, and eventually some other good stuff. I have always wanted to find the '84 doubled ear and the '83 DDR since they seemed like attainable goals, but they keep on eluding me! I try to be positive though, and seem to have good luck, so I'll bet that in another 3 years they'll show up!

I have had eyeballs on just about every Lincoln cent variety out there, but the ones to add to my collection that still have eluded me are the biggies 55P DDO-001, and the 69S DDO-001.

It tells us where we're at as far as wanting pretty much the same things.
BJ put it in a nut shell what I was thinking, and I'm not bias, I want them all!

One thing and one thing only. A First reported 1930's Lincoln cent "RPM" for CONECA. Doesnt matter on the date 1930-1939 just ONE!

Super fun topic! Of course we all want to find those major varieties, but the 1984 doubled ear is at the top of my list to find.
