Found these the other day. 2 of them. The cherrypickers guide says it's a possible RPM.FS# 1c- 021.51 To me I say a die chip that looks like a second mint mark. Will they slab such a coin? I wouldn't think so. Chris might know that answer.
Frank
Hi Frank, in my opinion, that's a really interestingly shaped die chip. Looks like a D in the 5, but I think it's just a chip nonetheless. Chips are very common in this area of the 5. Furthermore, the object doesn't look as tall as a D mintmark.

This is an interesting coin- not because of the die chip, but because the authors of The Cherrypicker's Guide saw it fit to include as a "variety" (FS-521). My first experience with this coin was a year ago. I'd been searching for it for quite a while. A friend at the PNNA show was excited to show me an "error" collection he bought. I started looking through it and realized it was 10 stock boxes of Spadone varieties from the 70s (ghost Lincoln, cracked heads, etc.). Then I saw the above referenced die chip- My buddy said he (overpaid) $500 for the group. I agreed to pay him $600, solely to acquire the one coin.
I'd always thought it was a rediculous varety (it's my avatar) to have in the CP guide, but when looking at it in hand I realzied it really did have the shape and definition of a D mintmark. Long story short- I put that one coin out of the collection in a "safe place" and never saw it again since leaving Seattle....
Shortly there after, a friend told me he had an example. When he sent it to me, I saw it was an earlier state of the chip, CLEARLY a die chip. Nonetheless, because it's in the CP guide, PCGS attributes it. I had it slabbed and ran it through a series of Teletrade auctions (I figured as a part of the registry set it'd have some demand), kept lowering the price each auction it cycled through. No takers and I got the coin back in the mail yesterday.
Personally Frank, I wouldn't blow the money slabbing it, I haven't realized any monetary gain and have well over $100 into it with reserve bids and slab fee....
There are some earlier threads about this variety on LCR, somewhere around April or May.
Frank- there doesn't seem to be much demand for this coin, but because I have a history with it, I'd have an interest in your examples, if you want to make a little money on them, PM me. The second coin you show is interesting, it's a state of this chip I haven't seen before.
Fun to see more out there.
