I can't tell from the pictures i've seen regarding this variety... I picked a box of odds and ends today and this was in a 2x2 flip without any designation. dealer i bought these from deals more with silver currency so he may not have known either...
Stonecad, Go to the 'Homepage' on this site, (at the top left of this page), and click on 'San Francisco Mintmark Styles'. There is a ton on info on there. Also, there are many links on this site that you can get to, where you can read up on many other topics.
thanks! I looked at those images prior to asking and I guess I still cannot tell the difference. you guys believe its a type I so thats good enough for me.
Also looks like a Type one to me too. The Type one seems to be very
"closed" making an "O" shape due to the thickness of mint mark. The Type Two is much "cleaner" with more of an opening and does not appear as a round "O" in the top and bottom of the "S"
is ther a misconception here... I found this today and Ken Potter's opinion is that the clear fields seem to be less of an indicator than the shape of the loops... He states the Type 1's have more of an oval shaped loop as where the Type 2's have more rounded... This coin appears to have very round loops...

well I did an overlay of that very same MM on LCR and the perimeter shape matches pretty much exactly... this seems to be in line with Ken Potter's opinion that the pressure involved with the punching is just as much a factor as anything else...
I didn't really give the intial opinion any second thought but after actually reading the information about the loops - I can see this coin being a type 2... especially considering the non-oval shape to the loops... I dont think there is any mistaking that my coin doesn't have an oval shap to the loops... so at this point i'm looking back into it..
