Found this in an old box of coins, looks like a Blank Copper Planchet but is the size of a Nickel and weighs 5gr. There were foreign coins in the box so possibly its not U.S. Is there a way to identify planchets?

Gotta read the whole post Simon!!
No way to tell it's origin, or even it's age without being able to trace it's original source. It could have been intended for a coin, for a token, or nothing having to do with the minting process.Chris & Charity Welch- LIVEANDIEVARIETIES

Are you saying it looks like a coin that has worn smooth?
Picture #1 actually looks much rougher in the photo than it really is. Its very smooth yet has corroded. It shows no signs of circulation wear and is still thick, where a worn coin that had its entire surface worn smooth wouldnt. I believe this blank (if it is a blank) hasnt been "rolled" yet since there is no rim at all.Attached FilesComment

It has a sharp edge on one side, and a rounded edge on the other side. Except for the color, it looks like a knockout from an electrical box to me.All opinions expressed are not necessarily shared by willbrooks or his affiliates. Taking them may result in serious side effects. Results may vary. Offer not valid in New Jersey.Comment

Now that's something I wouldn't have thought of. Sometimes you definitely need to think outside the box (pun intended)! I would guess that if it were a knockout, it would have the remnants of the tabs around the edge?it looks like a knockout from an electrical box to me.Bob Piazza

I just dont see many knockouts being made of bronze/copper and weighing exactly 5.0 gr.
But then again, blanks are punched out of sheets at the mint, right?Last edited by ericodapro; 11-22-2012, 11:59 AM.Comment

The sharp rim on one side and the round rim on the other side would preclude it from being a blank or planchet that is used for coining, unless it was institutionally manipulated. A punch out from an electrically wiring box does seem to be a good answer.
